Cyber Risk: The New
“Natural Disaster” of Insurance?
For many years, the global insurance sector has defined risks largely through threats
belonging to the physical world: earthquakes, floods, storms, fires… However, at the
current stage of digitalization, this picture is changing fundamentally. Today, a type
of risk that is invisible, borderless, and capable of affecting thousands of institutions
simultaneously has come to the forefront: cyberattacks. The question is: Can cyber
risk truly be defined as a new “catastrophic risk” from an insurance perspective?
