Passed to international standards in insurance coverage for nuclear energy

The Insurance and Private Pension Regulation and Supervision Agency (SEDDK) announced that it has achieved a legal infrastructure compatible with the "Paris Convention on Legal Liability to Third Parties in the Field of Nuclear Energy" (Paris Convention) and its additional protocols, to which our country is a party, and that the framework of the operator's responsibility has been clarified with the publication of the Nuclear Regulation Law in the Official Gazette dated 08/03/2022 and numbered 31772.

“Our primary goal is to compensate for damages that may arise from nuclear incidents through an insurance mechanism,” the statement said, noting that the company will become the flagship of the insurance sector in this area by requiring the operator to have insurance or show other guarantees by law.

The insurance coverage in this area has been determined in accordance with international standards, the statement said, emphasizing that the coverage of coverage for damage caused by nuclear incidents will comply with international practices in accordance with the Treaty of Paris.

The Nuclear Insurance Pool is being established

It was underlined that by the arrangement, it will be possible to obtain guarantees from the Nuclear Insurance Pool, which will be established for the operator and is planned to be operational in 2022.

In the SEDDK statement, it is pointed out that the risks arising from nuclear power plants worldwide, especially in America, Germany, are insured by the insurance pool or mutual companies consisting of energy companies instead of a single insurance company and it was said: “These pools make mutually supportive agreements on issues such as providing financial support, sharing experiences on nuclear risks, establishing standards in the detection and prevention of risks, and providing technical assistance when necessary, it is envisaged that the Turkish Nuclear Insurance Pool to be established will also be included in this system.”

In the statement, it was also noted that the pool in question will be located within the Special Risks Management Center established in 2021 and will provide guarantees for the nuclear power plants that will operate in our country.
